DB2 12 Continuous Delivery – New Challenges For Deployment

Ulf Heinrich - SEGUS

Abstract:

Fundamental changes in the DB2 z world often lead to concerns. Let’s face it – some changes force us to change! While a DB2 version migration usually took months, or even years, there will be no new DB2 version after 12, but continuous code drops. This will have a tremendous impact on migration strategies, because we have to find a reliable way to test these code deliveries in a fraction of time. If we make it, Business Divisions will become enthused at how quickly new technology becomes available for new applications. This presentation will describe the difference between Code, Catalog, Function and Application Levels, how you can control them and how you can fallback in case of anomalies. It also illustrates how we still can be pro-active in testing without burning weeks and months. Learn how to choose from four different levels of testing and a new way of automation. CD-Screening allows you to pick and choose from KPI based test automation. The levels include simple anomaly alerting, access path verification, clone Pre-apply and even workload capture/replay to easily discover different behavior resulting from a new code level. Joining this presentation, you’ll learn how to align Continuous Delivery to your Continuous Availability.

Presentation Outline:

1 – Agile, Continuous Delivery, DevOps – just buzz words, or new methodologies?

2 – DB2 Code, Catalog, Function and Application Levels – differences and dependencies.

3 – Activation/Deactivation of new code and how to fallback and when you can’t.

4 – Different flavors of (pro-active) CD-Screening and how it can be automated.
-Anomaly alerting based on Incompatibility Change Indicators (ICIs)
-Dyn./Stat.Access Path Change Detection e.g.via Plan Management
-Clone based code change pre-apply exploiting Backup System
-Workload-KPI verification using SQL replay and KPI comparison

5 – Conclusion – looking back at BIF Compatibility, APPLCOMPAT and how it may develop

DB2 12 for z/OS and Beyond

Jeff Josten - IBM

Abstract:

This presentation gives a high level overview of DB2 12, and also some other interesting features which have shipped recently on DB2 11 (and sometimes DB2 10) including native DB2 RESTful services, DB2aaS cloud-style provisioning, and IDAA on Cloud. We will also take a peek into the future for what is planned beyond DB2 12.

Bio:

Jeff Josten is an IBM Distinguished Engineer and the lead architect of DB2 for z/OS. He has worked in DB2 Development at the IBM Silicon Valley Lab since 1985. He owns several patents in the area of data base technology, and is a frequent speaker at user group and customer meetings.

DB2 for z/OS Continuous Delivery

Jeff Josten - IBM

Abstract:

DB2 for z/OS is moving to a continuous delivery model for shipping new features. The main objectives are to speed up delivery of important new functions and to make it easier for customers to manage DB2 upgrades. This presentation will give an overview of the continuous delivery mechanisms and suggested best practices for managing DB2 in this continuous delivery world.

Unlocking the power of DB2 12 for z/OS

Ben DeVivo & Umesh Mehta - IBM

Abstract:

This presentation covers the recent DB2 12 enhancements delivered in IBM DB2 utilities and tools delivered in Q4 of 2016. We'll cover the focus areas of utilities, administration, perfomance, etc. as well as provide some of the additional enhancements delivered in the same release to add deliver additional features and drive down costs. The topic of continuous delivery and how it affects the IBM DB2 utilities and tools will also be presented.

Also, Ben will discuss the IBM - Rocket partnership

Bio:

Ben DeVivo has been working with and supporting z/OS clients for 30 years. He joined IBM in 1999 to help build a new business that focused on database tooling to more effectively manage DB2 and IMS. Over the past 17 years, Ben has had a number of leadership roles, and has worked with clients throughout North America. In his current role as Technical Sales manager for the US Financial Services Market, he leads a technical team that supports the zAnalytics portfolio of solutions. The portfolio includes DB2, and all of the tooling that assists clients in managing DB2, and analytics on z/OS. The team supports banking, insurance and financial services companies throughout the US.

Umesh Mehta is a Senior IT Specialist with IBM and has 20+ years' experience working with DB2 on the mainframe platform covering various aspects of systems programming, database administration, and software support. In his current role he is working as a DB2 Advisor and DB2 Tools Technical Sales Specialist providing technical consulting and pre and post-sales technical support for DB2 for z/OS Tools and engine.
